About JayJay August is a Portland-based musician and music teacher with over 15 years of experience performing, recording, and touring across the country (and Canada). Rooted in rock, metal, punk, and jazz, Jay brings a deep technical foundation and a genuine love for music in all its forms to everything he does - whether that's on stage, in the studio, or in a lesson.
As a MusicianJay's musical journey has taken him through some of the heaviest and most adventurous corners of the underground music scene. He has been a part of Bay Area thrash metal band Archea, Oakland thrash outfit Hallucinator, and death metal band Dismembered Carnage. Most recently he has collaborated as one half of Portland experimental duo Spill, and continues to release solo experimental music, jazz, and noise under his own independent label, GURD Records.
Across all of these projects, Jay has developed a rare combination of technical precision and artistic fearlessness - the kind that only comes from years of writing, recording, and performing original music at a serious level. |
As a Teacher
Jay teaches drums, bass, and guitar to students of all ages and experience levels - from complete beginners picking up an instrument for the first time to intermediate players looking to break through a plateau.
His teaching philosophy isn't about replicating technique or playing in a particular style. Jay believes that music is something you feel first and learn second, and his lessons are designed to help students develop their own natural sense of timing, groove, and musical identity. Whether you're drawn to metal, pop, jazz, or have no idea what you want to play yet - Jay meets you where you are and helps you find yourself in the music.
Lessons are available virtually and in person in Portland, Oregon. All ages and skill levels welcome.
